Basing Stirges.

Our Stirges will require some form of flight stand in order that they can be based. Because of the small nature of the models we suggest using 0.8mm brass rod when basing the models.  Each pack includes 6 pieces of brass rod cut to size. This guide will show you how to attach your Stirges to the brass rod fight stands and fix them to a base ready for priming.

Please note: If you would like to receive your Stirges cleaned up and pre-mounted on the brass rod we will do this for you. Available in the store here.

To attach the Stirges the tools you are going to need are a pin vice with 1mm drill bit, superglue, pliers, and the bases you normally use for your miniatures.

First step is clean up. Carefully remove any mould lines and flash from the castings. At this stage the proboscis on the Stirges can be filed to a narrower point.

Next we need to drill a small hole in the Stirge in order to attach the brass rod in place. Here we have two options. Firstly we can drill straight up into the belly of the Stirge. This is the easiest method and the standard position for a flight stand.

The second method is to drill the hole at the back of the Stirge. This is the method I prefer but it is purely an aesthetic choice. The brass rod will join the Stirge as in the picture below.

Below is a picture of Stirges attached by both methods. Pick the one you prefer (or choose a method of you own!).
You can see that for the Stirge on the left the brass rod has been bent to hold the model in the correct position.

Once you have all your Stirges attached to their flight stands the next step is to attach the stands to a base. I'm using 3mm mdf bases in this example. You can base all the Stirges individually or do as I have done and group base some of the models. Vary the height of the Stirges by snipping the flight stands to different lengths then drill holes into the base and glue into position.

All that is left to do is prime before painting and then finish off the base with some suitable texture.
